Botox for Frown Lines

Botox for Frown LinesBotox, or Botulinum toxin, relaxes the specific facial muscles that cause unwanted lines. The ideal areas to treat are those wrinkles which are caused by muscles that have no significant function. For example, deep creases between the eyebrows, "crows' feet" around the eyes and forehead lines.

Injections for frown lines have proved to be very successful. Good results may be obtained after a single treatment and can last three months or more. The injection may take 3-12 days, or longer, to have the maximum effect. Some patients with well-developed facial muscles may not see a complete effect on the targeted muscles, but further treatments will have a cumulative effect.

How will I look after treatment?

Immediately after treatment there may be mild swelling, which usually subsides within a few hours. Slight bruising sometimes occurs and make-up can be worn, if required, within a few minutes of treatment. After Botox Therapy, patients should avoid touching or rubbing the treated areas for two days and use their facial muscles as much as possible. This encourages uptake of the Botox into the muscle and not only improves the end result, but minimises any side-effects.

What are the side-effects?

Side-effects from Botox are rare indeed; it is one of the safest cosmetic procedures available. Occasionally, a temporary drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow may occur, but this only lasts a few weeks. Rarely, a transient numbness develops in the treated area. An extremely rare side-effect is generalised weakness and fatigue. Side-effects are also related to the doctor who performs the procedure, so it is very important to have the treatment performed by an experienced doctor. Finally, as with any injection, there is a small risk of infection. If you are pregnant or breast feeding, the treatment is not recommended.

How many treatments will I need?

Repeat treatments are usually required every 6-12 months over a 24 month period. Clinical trials report that some patients subsequently require treatment once or twice a year after this period, but some patients claim permanent improvement occurs.
